Shatin Pass Road (Fat Chong Temple)

The trail starts by ascending the flight of steps on the left beside Fat Chong Temple at Shatin Pass Road. Up ahead a short distance, it follows the wooded muddy path on the left. Passing through the rear of Fat Chong Temple and the electric tower at the roadside, it then traces the uphill path on the right referring to the ribbon marks. Head the trail through the woods, it leads up to the second electric tower. After passing through under the electric tower, it follows the path ahead, then ascends to the junction after a short distance, where there is a gutter on the ground. At that time, if you are going to climb Lion Rock only along the ridge of "Lion Tail", from the junction you could follow the gutter to the left a few steps ahead, then take the uphill path on the right.

At that time, crossing the gutter and heading to the next gutter, the trail traces it to the end then joins the muddy path. After passing through the patch of the weeds, it follows the concrete path. Looking to the right, the rock like a small lion could be seen. Still go ahead, the trail cuts through the woods. Along the way, the quarry in a small scale could be seen on the left. Overlook up to the ridge ahead, the rocky horse is just towering over there as if it were waiting for us. Head to the junction, the trail follows the left path. It starts the steep, short climb then joins the right path at the next junction where an electric tower could be seen on the right-front. Along the path, it comes to the larger quarry site on the left. However, the cut on the hillside seems to be a scar of the nature.

Follow the uphill path on the right of the quarry site, it is steeply up through the woods along the edge of the quarry site. Up to the natural rock platforms, it opens up. Look back to the opposite, it offers a spectacular mountain view over Unicorn Ridge undulating to Kowloon Peak. To the right, the concrete jungle of Tsz Wan Shan nestled among the hills could be also seen. Continue to climb along the trail, it then comes to the rocky section.

Along the way from the ribbon marks, climb over the rocky slope then skirt to the left until another rocky slope. Afterward, climb the second slope up to the rocky wall, then move to the right horizontally until joining the muddy path (there are some strings installed but not too dependent on them). Head the trail a few steps, the rocky horse suddenly appears at the short front. The horse seems to be a horse piece standing on a chess board and is just overlooking down. Opposite to the horse mouth, there is an exit of another uphill path to climb there named "Rocky Horse Inner Ridge". After detouring the rocky horse and going up a bit, the large rocky gap could be seen on the left due to the rock splitting.

Lion Rock

Continuing on along the trail up, through the woods it opens up. Further ahead, it comes to the junction, where there is a rocky tower broken into two on the roadside as named Fool Tower, and also the confluence of Rocky Horse Ridge and Lion Tail Ridge. Afterward, follow the main path of Lion Tail Ridge to the right, it contours along the ridge up roughly toward the west. Along the way looking to the left hillside, the very large rocky slope could be seen where there is an uphill path named "Lion Belly Path". Futher up, it leads to the top of the "lion tail". Trace the main path of lion rock ahead, it undulates along the back of the lion. When approaching to the lion head, the straight cliffy escarpment with mighty aura is within the sight.

At the junction before the lion head, follow the downhill path on the right. Descend to the MacLehose Trail, then go forward to the pavilion of Kowloon Pass. Afterward, head the left path downhill according to the signpost to Wang Tau Hom, it leads to Lion Rock Park. Finally, follow the road in front of the park down to Tin Ma Court at Chuk Yuen Road.

Exit: At the junction of Fool Tower, you could follow the left path downhill along the ridge of "Lion Tail" to return to Shatin Pass Road.

Summary

Visiting the horse rock and climbing some rocky slopes are interesting. It is a trail for another choice to climb Lion Rock. Moreover, Lion Rock is symbolic of Hong Kong's society. Coming Lion Rock again and overlooking around, it seemed to have a line pulling me through a time tunnel back to the past during the brilliant years that lighted up the face of the lion. Until now from the twenty years ago, the withered flowers beneath the hill was covered with the murky haze. I sighed deeply.
