The trail starts by following Tai Tong Shan Road on the right after going back to the junction along Kiu Hing Road from the bus stop of Tai Tong Shan Road. Along Tai Tong Shan Road, it then slowly descends. Beyond the pavilion on the right, the road begins the tree-lined section. Winding up to the junction where there are the map boards on the left, descend the flight of wooded stone steps on the left of the map boards, it directly leads up to the open grassland of Tai Tong Barbecue Site. Pass through the barbecue site, it still follows Tai Tong Shan Road until the gate of the road, where there is the public carpark on the right.
Overlook Yuen Long
Sweet Gum Woods
Head Tai Tong Shan Road, then follow the right path at the junction of Fitness Corner according to the signpost that it then becomes one-way. Afterward, passing through the junction to Tai Tong Valley on the right, still go ahead. Some of the alone maples are standing on the roadside. Further ahead, it comes to Sweet Gum Woods. Overlook the sweet gum woods, they are quite colorful from green gradually to red that seem to inform you of changing the season. The sunlight through the leaves in red, orange and yellow projects on your face then warms you up. Moreover, the shapes and the streaks of the leaves are also graceful.
Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail
Continue on along Tai Tong Shan Road, it then descends slowly where also has some maples alongside. Afterward, the trail leads down along the valley, cuts through the verdant woods and become peaceful. However, the warm red atmosphere from the sweet gums is still in mind. Head to the junction, follow Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail on the left according to the signpost which muddy path winds along the valley through the woods. Along it up to the small temple, still go ahead down at the junction. On the way, the stream is gurgling and many diverse plants lushly grow in the valley. At the junction of Nam Hang Pai, ascends the flight of stone steps on the left still along Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail according to the signpost. After joining the concrete path, follow it to the left. Along the verdant tree lined path, it is peaceful and delightful. Finally, it leads to Tai Tong Barbecue Site then follows Tai Tong Shan Road downhill back to the bus station.
Branch: You could also retrace your steps to Tai Tong if not to follow Yuen Tsuen Ancient Trail.
Summary
The red sweet gums is beautiful like showing warm among cold, as if they showed off the final fireworks before the end of their lifes. Actually, they are the presentation of the result that maples survive against the poor condition in severe winter. I admire the adaptability for survival from the wisdom of nature that people living in the city with rich material benefits often forget.
